Youngstown police responded to a report of gunfire on Pennsylvania Ave. at 2:46 a.m. on Sunday that left one Youngstown State University student in the hospital.

The police have two suspects in custody. The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center where she is reported to be in stable condition.

According to police reports, Sylean Wilson, age unreported, from Pittsburgh, has been charged with felonious assault and obstructing official business. Rashaad Lewis, 19, also from Pittsburgh, was charged with obstructing official business.

A YPD officer chased Wilson into a nearby apartment. Lewis is charged with allegedly closing the door after Wilson entered to keep the police officer out.

The officer recovered a handgun between two window panes in the apartment.

Wilson and Lewis are being held in the Mahoning County jail.

YSU President Cynthia Anderson said in an email that her first concern is for the victim.

“These senseless shootings are taking place entirely too often,” she said. “I always dread answering my phone in the early hours of the morning and seeing that the call is from the YSU police. My stomach immediately feels sick.”
