Youngstown has received much attention from presidential candidates Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, but YSU students have a chance to vote in an election closer to home.

Students can vote for president, executive vice president and other positions of Student Government Association today from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Kilcawley Center in front of Home Savings.

Carla Hill, commissioner of the elections board, said they are expecting more students to turn out and vote because of much publicity from the candidates.

This year's candidates are Michael McGiffin and Shanna Kelly for president and executive vice president, respectively, opposed by Ramon Ramos and Stephen Foley for the same offices.

Hill said students should vote because SGA represents students and if they need advice or are having problems, then they can contact SGA.

Although some students aren't quite sure who they'll be casting their ballots for, other students have no interest in SGA and aren't concerned with voting.

Senior Leon Edwards said he doesn't plan on voting. "I haven't in the five years I've been here and I'm not going to now," he said.

Freshman Amanda Bowlby said she isn't voting because, "I don't know anything about it."

Sophomore Mike O'Neill said he doesn't know SGA or any of the names on the ballot.

Students gave other reasons for not voting.

Freshman Julie Boyce said, "I'm not registered."

Hill gave the same reason for why some students don't vote: lack of knowledge about SGA. Hill said that if students check out the Web site or talk to someone on SGA, they can learn about the organization and its candidates.

Other students have decided to exercise their right to vote.

Freshman Jeneane Crago said, "If it's a day I'm here I will."

Freshman Edward Tulanko said even though he hadn't really planned on voting, there's still a chance that he will. "I don't know a reason why I wouldn't, it's a chance to voice [my] opinion," he said.

Sophomore Chris Tamasovich is voting for other reasons. He knows one pair of candidates, McGiffin and Kelly.

If miss their chance to vote today for other reasons, they can cast their ballots Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the second floor of Kilcawley.
