The last time a Penguin football player was named the Gateway Conference's Newcomer of the Year, Marcus Mason went on to have a stellar career and finished as one of the top running backs in the nation.
For the second time in three years, the Penguins have another Newcomer of the Year to build a team around.
Junior wide reciever Ferlando Williams was dubbed the conference's Newcomer of the Year on Wednesday. Joining Williams on the All-Newcomer team were freshman defensive tackle Torrance Nicholson, sophomore punter Ben Nowicki, cornerback De'Angelo Wilson, and junior tailback Kevin Smith.
William's put together a fascinating first season in a Penguins uniform. He caught a team-high 42 passes for a team-leading 499 yards and two touchdowns.
