Editor,

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity at Youngstown State University is a department in which I have worked with very closely during my time as president of the Student Diversity Council.

Now there is a new director, poised to make her mark on YSU in whatever means possible, be them positive or negative. With the recent ethics banquet sponsored by Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, a request was made to the EOD in order to buy ad space, or sponsor YSU students to attend the event.

I understand resources are tight in a time of decreasing funds from state sources.

However, the organization was hoping for a sign of support for its ethical and diverse speaker, diverse program and networking opportunities — all of which were centered around helping nonprofit and charity organizations; one of which helps terminally ill children. The response from the director of the EOD was that she will NOT support any fraternity or sorority at YSU.

This proves to me that she is not in touch with YSU, nor does she care about the betterment of students when she could not even come up with $10 to pay for the minimal amount of ad space as a sign of support for ethics, diversity and students, all because she does not wish to support anything Greek.

Diversity at YSU is prevalent in our Greek system. The blatant disrespect for Greek life, the lack of understanding as to what diversity truly is and the insensitive, uneducated statement about YSU Greeks proves to me that the director needs to either realize that a university is made up of students, or move on to the next job that will allow her to show her true feelings toward students and diversity.

I am sure students would not protest a closer parking space after her departure. Greek life is an important aspect to YSU because it is supposed to build people of all diverse backgrounds up, and assist them in supporting something larger than themselves.

Maybe if the director of the EOD followed such a mentality, this problem would not be an issue.

Our event is over, but her attitude toward those who try to better students, charities and the university/community still remains. She should strive to make Greek life a positive model of diversity, but instead she herself discriminates!

Editor,

Upon reading the article, "'90s nostalgia can't make us love outdated SOLAR," in your latest issue, I just want to note that Youngstown State University is updating their registration system after this semester ends.

Students registering for Summer 2008 and fall 2008 during the upcoming spring semester will be using the Banner Self Service, a completely new registration program. Thanks!
